Scope 2 Revision Priorities: Integrity, Impact, Feasibility

The Goals of the Scope 2 Revision Process

It's time for a revision to Scope 2 guidance. Those on all sides agree that the focus should be on integrity -- the accuracy of the accounting measures; impact -- how these accounting measures lead to the intended goal of more CFE; and feasibility -- the reality of what it takes to implement projects around the world.

The options under review

Mandatory load-matched 24/7 CFE argues that the easiest way to ensure integrity of projects is to add location into the accounting. The theory is that accountability is a lot easier when the project is just down the road.

However, a project doesn't need to be in sight to be accounted for accurately. In fact, due to the complexity of modern grids, projects close by might not be any easier to account for!

If the world's focus is on the most accurate accounting that will catalyze action towards more clean energy procurement -- a focus on actionability is key. A model that leans towards flexibility will ensure feasibility, can incorporate integrity, and will most definitely lead to more impact.
