Limitations of Hourly Matching Claims for Scope 2 Reporting
Hourly matching may sound rigorous, but this article outlines key technical and market flaws that make it insufficient as a standalone solution for Scope 2 reporting.
McKinsey & Co. – Rethinking Your Company’s Clean Power Strategy
McKinsey urges companies to evolve beyond traditional REC purchases and embrace power procurement strategies that prioritize emissions impact and grid decarbonization.
ZeroGrid Independent Advisory Initiative: Deliverability Definition Memo
Energy experts call for a robust, geographically-aware definition of “deliverability” in Scope 2 accounting to ensure emissions claims reflect real-world grid impacts.
Expert Consensus on Carbon Impact (Open Letter)
Over 50 experts agree: credible emissions reductions require impact-based accounting, not just the purchase of certificates or hourly matching.
The Clean Energy Buyers Association calls for immediate updates to the Greenhouse Gas Protocol to reflect practical, scalable solutions that drive real decarbonization.
It's time for a revision to Scope 2 guidance. Those on all sides agree that the focus should be on integrity -- the accuracy of the accounting measures; impact -- how these accounting measures lead to the intended goal of more CFE; and feasibility -- the reality of what it takes to implement projects around the world.
Mandatory load-matched 24/7 CFE argues that the easiest way to ensure integrity of projects is to add location into the accounting. The theory is that accountability is a lot easier when the project is just down the road.
However, a project doesn't need to be in sight to be accounted for accurately. In fact, due to the complexity of modern grids, projects close by might not be any easier to account for!
If the world's focus is on the most accurate accounting that will catalyze action towards more clean energy procurement -- a focus on actionability is key. A model that leans towards flexibility will ensure feasibility, can incorporate integrity, and will most definitely lead to more impact.
